Flip Phillips

Joseph Edward "Flip" Phillips ( born March 26, 1915 in New York City, New York; † August 17, 2001 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida ) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist and clarinetist

Life

Phillips first played clarinet with Frankie Newton (1940-1941) and saxophone with Larry Bennett ( 1942-1943 ). From 1944 to 1946 he starred in Woody Herman's First Herd. He became famous for his many years of performances at the Jazz -at- the- Philharmonic tours by Norman Granz from 1946 to 1957. He had also been the Granz - Music Film Improvisation ( 1950). In 1959 he went to Europe with Benny Goodman and then led a quartet in Pompano Beach ( Florida).

Philip was one of the impulsive tenor saxophonist of the late swing era. During a long career, he has been heard on many albums; He eventually took over as 80 -year-old still on the CD Swing is the Thing for Verve Records.
