Footballer of the Year in Germany

As a footballer of the year the most outstanding player of the season is annually awarded in Germany. The Player of the Year is chosen by the members of the Association of German sports journalists (VDS ) and honored together with the journal Kicker sports magazine. As a candidate, all German players as well as standing in a club in the Bundesliga contracted foreign players coming into question. The award is made since 1960, Uwe Seeler was the first title holder.

The most successful player, Franz Beckenbauer, who was elected four times total Footballer of the Year. With an age of 20 years at his first election in 1966, he is also the youngest player who was bestowed this honor. Michael Ballack, Sepp Maier and Uwe Seeler were awarded three times each. Hans Tilkowski 1965 was awarded the first goalkeeper as Footballer of the Year. Record winner at this position is Sepp Maier. The first foreign title holders in 2004 was the Brazilian Aílton. Reigning Player of the Year is the midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who played in the 2012/13 season at Bayern Munich and is the successor of Marco Reus. The most successful club is the FC Bayern Munich, who provided the best footballers in Germany 19 times. 18 times were excellent striker. The time interval between the largest awards is ten years (Franz Beckenbauer and Uwe Seeler ). The oldest known footballer of the year is Lothar Matthäus, who was with his second choice already 38 years old.
