France at the 1924 Winter Olympics

France participated in the Olympic Winter Games in 1924 in Chamonix with a delegation of 40 athletes in six sports part. The French NOK had reported 65 athletes to the Games, of which 40 participated in competitions. The members of the military patrol do not count as official Olympic participants. Three athletes started in different sports (see list of participants). A total of five athletes were already for the second time at the Olympic Games here:

  • Pierre Charpentier (1920 Ice Hockey)
  • Léonhard Quaglia (1920 Ice Hockey)
  • Alfred de Rauch (1920 Ice Hockey)
  • Charles Sabouret (1920 Figure Skating)
  • Simone Sabouret (1920 Figure Skating)

Balance: France despatched to host the largest Olympic team to Chamonix. Performance-wise, it had been expected at best in hockey with a French coin. The more pleasing the bronze medal of the young figure skating pair Andrée Joly and Pierre Brunet. The curler and the military patrol won bronze, which is not to be regarded as "big" surprise, however, in view of lack of participants in the two disciplines. The 33 -year-old captain of the military patrol Camille Mandrillon was Speaker of the Olympic oath. From today's perspective, an absurdity. For the 30 Km military patrol run in 1926 subsequently degraded to a demonstration sport. Thus, an athlete from a non-Olympic discipline spoke the oath of the athletes. The ice hockey players were, as already mentioned, the greatest hopes for a medal. After all, France 1923 European vice-champion. The team captained by Alfred de smoke disappointed but in the first round and was eliminated from. The hockey player Léonhard Quaglia, who went to the start in speed skating and there even was sixth in the all around, was the undisputed superstar in the whole of the French Olympic team.
