Friedrich Vordemberge-Gildewart

Vordemberge - Gildewart ( born November 17 1899 in Osnabrück, † December 19, 1962 in Ulm ) was a German graphic artist, painter and sculptor. The artistic work of Vordemberge- Gildewart is characterized by diversity. He created not only paintings, but also reliefs, collages and photomontages. In addition, he worked as a typographer, theater and stage painter, furniture designer and interior designer. His estate, consisting of art works, written and photographic documents and the library of the artist is located since 1997 in the Museum Wiesbaden.

Life and work

His birth name Vordemberge he expanded to Vordemberge- Gildewart to stand out from his eponymous, two years older cousin Vordemberge. Gildewart was the name Osnabrück's old town alley where he grew up. Vordemberge - Gildewart began his career with a carpentry apprenticeship in woodworking Julius Sagittarius.

From 1919 he studied at the Technical University in Hannover architecture, sculpture and painting. In Hanover Vordemberge- Gildewart worked on the avant-garde magazine, " The Tempest " with.

In the years 1919-1922 Vordemberge- Gildewart began his artistic work with abstract reliefs and collages, and from 1923 with the painting. In Hanover it came to meet and exchange with the artists Kurt Schwitters, Oskar Schlemmer, Wassily Kandinsky and Hans Arp. In 1924 founded Vordemberge- Gildewart together with Hans Nitzschke the artist group: "Group K ". Also in 1924, he met Theo van Doesburg in Hanover. This offered him membership in the group De Stijl, which he accepted.

In 1927 founded Vordemberge - Gildewart the " abstract Hanover », along with Kurt Schwitters, Hans Nitzschke, Buchheister and Rudolf Jahns. The " abstract hannover " were a local chapter of the International Association of Expressionists, Futurists, Cubists and Constructivists. 1932 Vordemberge- Gildewart became a member of the artist group Abstraction- Création. The artist group had been established by Naum Gabo, Antoine Pevsner, Auguste Herbin, Theo van Doesburg and Georges Vantongerloo in Paris.

In 1936 he moved to Berlin. His art was under the Nazi regime as "degenerate". He, therefore, decided to emigrate and went in 1937 only to Switzerland and then to Amsterdam into exile, where he recorded also in contact with Max Beckmann and other emigrants. Lived in Amsterdam and he worked until 1954. Until the outbreak of war in 1939 participated Vordemberge - Gildewart at several major international exhibitions in New York, Paris and London. In 1954, his appeal was made to the Ulm School of Design. Vordemberge - Gildewart worked there until his death on 19 December 1962 as head of the department for visual communication.

Vordemberge- Gildewart took part in documenta 1 (1955) and Documenta II ( 1959) in Kassel. He was buried in his home town of Osnabrück. They honored him with the award of the Justus Moser Medal.

Vordemberge- Gildewart Foundation

In compliance with the testamentary intent of the donor, Ilse Leda, wife of Vordemberge - Gildewart that in Rapperswil in the canton of St. Gallen awards ( Switzerland ) based foundation since 1983 prizes and grants for young artists. The scholarship is one of the most highly endowed awards for young art in Europe. Prize winners were previously under other Yves network Hammer, James Aldridge, Volker Lang and Ricarda Roggan. Vordemberge- Gildewart Initiative ( Osnabrück)

In 2005, Osnabrück citizens have joined together to Vordemberge- Gildewart initiative. In addition, the Mayor of the city of Osnabrück is the patron.
