Fuglafjørður

Fuglafjørður (literally bird Fjord ) is a relatively large town of the Faroe Islands at the same fjord on the east coast of Eysturoy.

To commune Fuglafjørður includes the villages of Hellur with 26 residents in the north and Kambsdalur with 170 inhabitants in the south. Despite its approximately 1,500 inhabitants Fuglafjørður is a real small town with various shops and service offerings.

Significant for the region is the port of Fuglafjørður with its almost a kilometer long quay. There is a fishing industry and a larger oil depot. The internationally operating fish meal factory Havsbrún is the largest employer in the area. Four shipping companies have their headquarters in Fuglafjørður. The company Vónin is an important marine equipment for trawlers and fishing boats.

History

In 1781 there were four districts ( býlingar ): við Gjógvará, við Gard, í and á Toftum Áargarði. 1801, when the Faroe Islands had about 5,000 inhabitants, 128 people lived in Fuglafjørður. Middle of the 19th century, the small settlements Trøðni á, á á Bakkanum and Høvdanum were added. 1901 325 people lived here. In the 1920s, all these settlements had grown together. In the 1940s, the settlements Rossagerði í ( í Neðra ), í Fløtugerði and Vestur á horn arose. The 1,000 -inhabitant threshold was exceeded in 1945. In the 1970s, the settlements Bjarnafløtum á, í í Bø Toftabønum and Norður emerged. 1981 bought the municipality at that time undeveloped area of Kambsdalur, where settled since 1985. Can Fuglafjørður be counted among the oldest places in the Faroe Islands, as is Kambsdalur the youngest.

Culture and Sport

In elementary school of Fuglafjørður currently teach 36 teachers 354 students from the 1st to the 10th grade. In the school building there is a wall painting of the famous Faroese painter Hans Hansen and Ingálvur av Reyni. Secondary schools are in the school center of Kambsdalur. Fuglafjørður also has a public library.

The place is located with the Mentanarhúsið ( " Culture House " ) is an important venue where many nationally important concerts. The Culture House was designed by Niels Midjord musicians and is known for its excellent acoustics.

In the resort you are not only proud of the many choirs, but also the annual exhibition of paintings by local artists. The most popular one today is Øssur Mohr.

In addition to the Ítróttarfelag Fuglafjarðar (football, volleyball, badminton, Faroese rowing ), there is also a swimming club with its own swimming pool. Other indoor sports will be held at the Sports Center of Kambsdalur.

South of Fuglafjørður there is the only thermal spring in the Faroe Islands, the Varmakelda. Every two years you meet today, people celebrated Varmakeldustevna where the rowing competitions for the national championship in focus ( see below).

Religion

Today's modern church dates from 1984. Older churches were occupied in 1690, 1719, 1738 and 1840. Latter was a typical Faroese wooden church. In 1871 it was replaced by a stone church, which was demolished in 1981.

In addition to the community of the Faroese People's Church has been around since 1923 and the Brethren. In 1928, Victor Danielsen after Fuglafjørður and settled down here as a missionary. Danielsen translated then in 20 years of work as the first complete Bible into Faroese, which came out in 1949.

Transport and Tourism

About 4,000 tourists visit annually Fuglafjørður. The city is located at the northern end of the road 65 of Norðragøta. There is about 10 times a day with a bus line 400 from Tórshavn on Kollafjørður, Oyrarbakki, Skálabotnur, Søldarfjørður and Leirvík.

An old trail in the category "moderate " leads 9 km over the mountain in north to Hellur. There is still no other direct path link both towns. To achieve Hellur by car, a detour of about 25 km is needed.

The town has a scout hall and a popular fish restaurant which is counted in the Danish Guide doors går til Færøerne with three stars to the highest category. From Tórshavn evening tours for the restaurant visit can be arranged.
