Gauliga Elsaß

The Gauliga Alsace was one of the top leagues in the era of National Socialism.

History

In the Gauliga Alsace ( sports 14a) played from 1940 teams from occupied at the beginning of the campaign in France Alsace to the Gaumeisterschaft and thus to participate in the final round of the German football championship. Numerous clubs changed their French names and attended German language descriptions.

In the first season, eight teams were represented in two seasons in the league, the second year was conducted in a season with twelve teams in 1942 /43 and 1943/44, fought only ten clubs around the Gaumeisterschaft. In the season 1944/45, the league was again divided into two groups, whether then but even still held a play operation is unknown.

Teams and Championships Gauliga Alsace

In the season 1940/41, sat down in the two seasons of the upper and lower Alsace respectively the former French first division side FC Mulhouse 93 and lawn sports club Strasbourg by. The finals of the FCM decided for themselves, failed in the subsequent final round of the German Cup but already in the group matches. The second Alsatian Gaumeister, the SG SS Strasbourg, 1941/42, reached at least the quarter-finals. In the following two seasons, FC Mulhouse once again secured the title, but had to again in the German finals 1942/43 and 1943/44, early in their sails.
