Gauliga Württemberg

The Gauliga Württemberg ( from 1939 officially sports class Württemberg ) was one of the top 16 football leagues in Germany after the Nazi seizure of power.

History

The classification of the teams to Gauliga Württemberg from 1933 was based on Reichsgau Württemberg- Hohenzollern. In the first season, 1933/1934 nine teams played for the finalists of the German Championship, from the following season, ten teams participated. 1940, the league was divided into two seasons, played in six teams. The respective season winner played the Württemberg champions and participants of the finals. From 1941 there was again only one season. First, it occurred twelve teams against each other, as of 1942 only ten clubs were represented in the league again. The season 1944/45, has been canceled because of the chaos of war.

From the season 1938/39, the clubs of the Austrian province of Vorarlberg were assigned to the District of Lake Constance in sports Württemberg. However, none of the Vorarlberg clubs rose to the Gauliga.

VfB Stuttgart was the only team in the Gauliga Württemberg, which was able to advance to the final of the German Cup. On June 23 1935 the Finals in Cologne, however, was lost to FC Schalke 04 4:6.
