Gemma Spofforth

Gemma Spofforth (born 17 November 1987 in Shoreham- by-Sea, England) is a British swimmer.

Career

Spofforth is a specialist on the 100 and 200 meter backstroke distance. At the 2004 Short Course European Championships in Vienna won by reaching the third place 200m backstroke their first medal at international championships.

At the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing was about 100 meters back to just four hundredths behind the US-American Margaret Hoelzer and thus the bronze medal. This time of 00:59,38 min. improved at the same time only a few months previously established European record of Russian Anastasia Sujewa to three hundredths. Furthermore, they failed as Gesamtneute barely in deciding 200m backstroke at the finals.

The World Swimming Championships 2009 in Rome make their career peak dar. You surprisingly won gold on the 100 meter backstroke in a world record time of 00:58,12 min. At the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, she was three times second.
