Georg Rhau

Georg Rhau (also: Rhaw, * 1488 in ice rink; † August 6, 1548 in Wittenberg ) was a German book printer and choirmaster.

Life

Since 15 April 1513 Rhau studied philosophy at the University of Wittenberg. Here he acquired on June 27, 1514 the academic degree of Baccalaurus at the Faculty of Philosophy. In the summer semester 1518 he moved to the University of Leipzig, where he was admitted on 18 September 1518 Assessor at the philosophical faculty. In addition, he was from August 1518 worked as cantor of St. Thomas School and organized as such, while the Leipzig disputation on 27 June 1519, a twelve -part composed by him fair.

In 1520 he had to leave Leipzig due to its reformation friendly attitude, was hired as schoolmaster in Eisleben and Hildburghausen. The end of 1522 he settled in Wittenberg as a printer down, later he founded a printing press, which he ran until his death. The Offizin was continued by his heirs until 1566.

From Rhau two music textbooks for school use 1518 or 1520 as well as ten major collections of works by contemporary composers such as Heinrich Finck, Thomas Stoltzer, Balthasar Resinarius, Simon Cellarius, Sixt Dietrich, Arnold von Bruck and Ludwig Senfl are ( such as " Symphoniae iucundae atque adeo breves ", 1538) survived.

The music prints Georg Rhaus are the most significant testimony to the musical ideas and intentions of the circle to Martin Luther.
