Gerardo Martino

Daniel Gerardo "Tata " Martino ( born November 20, 1962 in Rosario, Argentina) is a former football player and since July 2013 coach of FC Barcelona.

Career

Martino has already played in the youth at Newell 's Old Boys from his birth city of Rosario. The defensive midfielder was more than 500 times on the Newell's and was with them three times Argentine champion. During his playing days Martino starred with Newell's Old Boys for the Argentine club Club Atlético Lanús and CD Tenerife in Spain, before he finished his career at O'Higgins Rancagua in Chile.

As a coach, he worked for different second division in Argentina before he won four championships in Paraguay with the club Cerro Porteño and Libertad in 2004, 2002, 2003 and 2006. In 2007 Martino coach of Paraguay and the same year was elected to South America Coach of the Year.

When he and his crew in 2011 was the final of the Copa America, which was lost 0-3 to Uruguay, he resigned following his post. The reason for this surprising departure he stated that with this finals his mission had ended in Paraguay. Since at the same time also the coach of the Colombian national team resigned from his office, this post was offered to him, but he declined and returned to his club Newell 's Old Boys, which was located at the time in a difficult situation. The team he led to win the second half of the season the Argentine League 2012/13, in the final of the Argentine championship, however, the Old Boys were subject to the first round winner CA Velez Sarsfield.

In July 2013 Martino became coach of FC Barcelona as the successor of illness resigned Tito Vilanova.
