Gordon R. England

Gordon Richard England ( born September 15, 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland) is an American businessman, politician and former Deputy Secretary of Defense of the United States.

England studied electrical engineering at the University of Maryland and Business Administration at Texas Christian University. He began a career in the defense industry and has worked at Honeywell, General Dynamics and Lockheed.

England was appointed in May 2001 to the Naval Secretary. His appointment to this position was due to his long affiliation with the arms industry is not without controversy. England moved in January 2003 to the Department of Homeland Security, where he was deputy minister. But in October of the same year he returned to his old office, as his designated successor, Colin R. McMillan had committed suicide; meantime had the authority managed temporarily Susan Livingstone and then Hansford T. Johnson.

After the change of Paul Wolfowitz to the World Bank of England was also nominated in May 2005 as Deputy Minister of Defence and set in January during the holiday season of the Senate of George W. Bush to the post. In January 2006, he gave up the post of Secretary of the Navy Donald C. Winter. He held the office of Deputy Secretary of Defense after the end of Bush's term of office for a few weeks, until he was replaced on February 11, 2009 by William J. Lynn.
