Geography

Geographical location

Görwihl is in the Hotzenwald, the southernmost part of the Black Forest, on the edge of Albtals. The landscape of the Hotze Forest is characterized by different large plateaus that slope terraced downgraded to the south. Most districts are at such high levels.

About 60 percent of the municipal area consists of forest.

Neighboring communities

The municipality is bordered to the north by Ibach and roof mountain, on the east by Albbruck, to the south by the town of Laufen castle and to the west by Rickenbach and Herrischried.

Community structure

The municipality includes the Görwihl to the 1970s independent municipalities Engelschwand, Hartschwand, Niederwihl, Oberwihl, Rotzingen, Rüßwihl, Segeten and Strittmatt. Among the former municipalities Engelschwand, Hartschwand, Oberwihl and Strittmatt each include only the villages of the same name. The municipality Görwihl within the boundaries of the municipality before the reform of the 1970s include the village Görwihl, the tines Freudenberg and Grünnetsmättle and the houses Kirch reason. For the former municipality Niederwihl include the village Niederwihl, the tine shield Bach and the house Sägehof. History

Görwihl was first mentioned in documents as Gerswillare in 1193. Görwihl was, like most places in the Hotzenwald centuries to the county of Hauenstein, thereby leading Austria. It became the center of the Einungen of Hotze Forest and played a role in the Salpetererunruhen. In 1806 Görwihl to the newly created Grand Duchy of Baden. 1838-1839 was the reconstruction of the destroyed by lightning and fire Catholic Church of St. Bartholomew by Friedrich Theodor Fischer preservation of the old tower. Unfortunately, the altars of the plasterer Jodok Friedrich Wilhelm were not preserved.

In the course of municipal reform in Baden- Württemberg, the current community on 1 January 1975 was re- formed by the Association of Municipalities Görwihl, Engelschwand, Niederwihl, Oberwihl, Rüßwihl, Segten and Strittmatt. Already on 1 July 1971 Rotzingen was incorporated into Görwihl. The incorporation of Hartschwand after Görwihl on July 1, 1972.

In the district of low stone are the remains of the castle Iburg, the castle Tiefenstein and an early Wallburg, the Wallburg Tiefenstein.

Origin of the place name Görwihl

Görwihl derived from Ger -Weiler. The name part of ' Ger ', Old High German for Speer, was chosen because Görwihl around the period that was shaped like a spearhead.
