Gray-la-Ville

Gray -la -Ville is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Gray -la- Ville is located at an altitude of 198 m above sea level, 1.5 km west of Gray and about 42 km west-northwest of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located in the southwest of the department, in the plane of Gray, in the Talniederung the Saône.

The area of ​​3.97 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the middle Saône Valley. The western and northern border is always along the Saône, with a bow it flows through alluvial plain. The plane is on average 185 m and has a width of about three kilometers wide. From the river, the municipality's area extends to the southeast over the valley, which is mainly agricultural, up to the outskirts of Gray. History

Traces of a Roman road traffic indicate a very early settlement of the area. Is first mentioned Gray -la -Ville in the year 887 as a possession of the Archbishop of Langres. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. As a result, the fate of Gray -la -Ville was closely connected with that of the city of Gray. The village was in 1479 by troops of the French king Louis XI. devastated. Today Gray -la -Ville is a member of the 16- villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Val de Gray.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Maurice with a portal Flamboyant was rebuilt in the 18th century. With 989 inhabitants (2007 ) Gray -la -Ville is one of the smaller towns in the Haute- Saône.
