Velet

Velet is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Velet situated at an altitude of 198 m above sea level, 3 km southwest of Gray and about 41 km west-northwest of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located in the southwest of the department, in the plane of Gray, in the Talniederung the Saône, at the western edge of the Forêt des Hauts Bois.

The area of ​​6.05 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the middle Saône Valley. The western border is always along the Saone, which flows here with several large loops through a flat area. The plane is on average 185 m and has a width of about three kilometers wide. From the river, the municipality's area extends eastward across the valley that is partly used for agriculture and is partly passed with forest ( Bois de la Vaivre ). Further east, the land rises slightly to a plateau, which is composed of sediments of the Tertiary. The eastern boundary is marked by the forest edge of the Forêt des Hauts Bois (Wald of Gray). Here the highest elevation of Velet is achieved with 241 m.

To Velet the hamlet of La Grange -des- Carmes part (215 m ) at the edge of the Forêt des Hauts Bois. Neighboring communities of Velet are Gray -la -Ville in the north, Gray in the east, the south and Esmoulins Mantoche in the West.

History

Traces of a Neolithic settlement site indicate a very early settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages Velet belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The village was dependent on Gray, but also had the monastery Corneux goods and property in Velet. In 1363 the village was destroyed by the Grandes dance companies under the French King John II. Together with the Franche -Comté Velet came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Ecclesiastically, the village belonged to the parish always Gray -la -Ville. Today Velet is a member of the 16- villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Val de Gray.

Population

With 432 inhabitants (2007 ) Velet one of the small towns in the Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 433 persons were still counted ), a continuous population growth was recorded since the early 1960s again. Today Velet part of the agglomeration Gray and has grown together with the neighboring village of Gray -la -Ville.

Economy and infrastructure

Velet has long been a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Today there are various operations of local small businesses, especially in construction and in a gravel pit. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes on a secondary road that leads from Gray to Apremont.
