The Ethniki Odos 16/Εθνική Οδός 16 (Greek for National road 16 ' ) is a highway in northern Greece that connects Thessaloniki with large parts of the peninsula and Chalkidiki Prefecture. It was established in 1963 as a connection between Thessaloniki and Ierissos about Arnea.
Course
It runs from Thessaloniki (triangle Efkarpia ) of the Highway 2 (A2 ) as " inner ring Thessaloniki" ( Esoteriki Periferiaki Odos, Thessaloniki ) in a southeasterly direction to Thessaloniki around the airport of Thessaloniki. From there, turn to the southeast into the interior of Halkidiki and runs in east-west direction across the " palm " (central country) of Halkidiki until after Stratoni the Strymonas golf.
From the airport of Thessaloniki, Mikra the National Highway 16 via a two-lane road south of Mount Chortiatis by the Anthemous Valley on Galatista after Polygiros, the capital of the prefecture of Halkidiki. From Polygiros from the National Highway 16 continues eastward: they happened on the northern edge of the Cholomondas the villages of Paleochora, Arnea, Paliochori, Stagira and leads through a green mountain valley. After Stagira, the National Road 16 the densely forested eastern slope of the Zentralchalkidiki rises in plenty of switchbacks down until they reached the village of Stratoni the sea or crossing the road from Stavros to Ouranoupoli / Ierissos.
History variants
The progression from Thessaloniki to Stratoni can ( Berndt & freytag: Halkidiki Thessaloniki Thassos map, digitized map on greektourism.com ) based on various maps as secured are considered. Unclear, however, from the history of Stratoni.
Variant Ouranoupolis
After the cards work by greektourism.com the national road 16 leads from Stratoni from further south along the sea. It runs along the Bay of Ierissos in the same city Ierissos. From Ierissos from the National Highway 16 crosses in a south-westerly direction, the isthmus (also the base of the peninsula of Mount Athos and location of Xerxes channel ) to Ouranopoli. There, the National Road 16 ends at the border of the Autonomous Community of Mount Athos ( monk Republic).
Variant Stratoni
The National Highway 16 ends in Stratoni. This would correspond to the road and the expansion of state.
Expansion of state
From Thessaloniki (triangle Efkarpia ) to the junction Airport / Thermi the national road 16 as " inner ring Thessaloniki" and motorway connection to Chalkidiki ( Nea Moudania ) expanded as a motorway: 2 carriageway with 3 lanes and a hard shoulder.
From Junction Airport / Thermi Road is equipped throughout a country road with oncoming traffic and one lane per direction. In some areas, particularly mountainous sections, the National Road has three lanes (one slow lane ).
From Stratoni Ierissos after the road is built with one lane in each direction. Ierissos Ouranoupolis to the road width is narrower than at the other portions.
