Great Kirchheim is a municipality with 1391 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia.

Geography

Geographical location

Großkirchheim is in average 1024 meters above sea level in the region of the Hohe Tauern Grossglockner, in the west it is Sonnblick, bounded by the east of the Schober group. About 40 % of its territory located in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Neighboring municipalities are Heiligenblut, Flattach and Mörtschach, in the north bordering the municipality of the province of Salzburg, on the west by East Tyrol.

History

To 1140/50 the United Kirchheim Castle at "locus Chyrichaim " ( Kirchheim ) was first mentioned.

Already at the time of the Celts and the Romans in Carinthia gold was mined in the Hohe Tauern. The mining of precious metals experienced here in the Middle Ages and from the end of the 15th century, its heyday. A written document in 1338 gave the rights to the pit " goldärtzt in the parish Haimer court and located the Tauern bey the assiduity ". Even into the 17th century was mined in what is now the municipality for gold only after ice by advancing the Pasterze more and more mines, mining had to be abandoned.

1850 constituted themselves in today's municipal area, the first independent local churches Doellach, Sagritz and mids, with the latter two in 1856 combined. From 1939 Doellach and Sagritz had a common mayoralty, 1956 they merged to form the community Doellach - Sagritz, and they renamed themselves and in 1983 - the historic importance of the castle and the District Court Following up - to upper Kirchheim.

Throughout the 20th century, the United Kirchheim developed into a two seasonal tourist town (about 45,000 overnight stays) and the seat of the office of the National Park Hohe Tauern. Through the municipal area leads the Grossglockner road (B 107).

According to Census 2001, United Kirchheim 1,606 inhabitants, of which 96.6 % 2.6% Austrian and German citizens. 95.8 % of the population are Roman Catholic and 2.1% for the Protestant Church, 1.5 % have no religious confession.

The Municipal Council of Great Kirchheim has 15 members and is composed as follows since the municipal elections in 2009 together:

Directly elected mayor is Peter Suntinger (FPÖ ).

Coat of arms

The central motif of the coat of arms of the municipality is the Grand Kirchheimer castle, which was built by Melchior plaster of Kirchheimegg († 1583 ).
