Großwarasdorf (Croatian: Veliki Borištof, Hungarian: Szabadbáránd ) is a municipality in Burgenland in the district Oberpullendorf in Austria with 1437 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

On 13 July 2000 Großwarasdorf was the first officially bilingual place-name signs with Burgenland community ( Großwarasdorf and Veliki Borištof ). Of the inhabitants belong to about 80 % of the ethnic group of the Burgenland Croats. In the village is a bilingual elementary and secondary school.

The municipality comprises the cadastral Großwarasdorf, Kleinwarasdorf and Nebersdorf.

History

Before Christ's birth, the area was part of the Celtic kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the area of the Celtic hillfort castle on the Schwarzenbacher Castle Hill.

Later, under the Romans, today Großwarasdorf lay in the province of Pannonia.

The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary ( German West Hungary). Since 1898, had to be used because of Magyarization the government in Budapest the Hungarian name Nagybarom. Großwarasdorf should have district suburb in 1830, but the residents opposed this project, and the former Hungarian authorities made the inconspicuous at that time Oberpullendorf to the district suburb. From this fact can also be the nickname of the Großwarasdorfer " varošćani " Derive ( townspeople ).

After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ).
