Guangzhou Metro

The Guangzhou Metro (Chinese:广州 地铁/ Guǎngzhōu Ditie ) is the subway of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province. They transported 4.392 million passengers daily (May 2011) to 236 km length. With 1.19 billion passengers per year (as of end of 2010) it is on the list of the world's most highly stressed metro systems in 10th place

History

The planning history of the Guangzhou Metro dates back to 1960, when then- governor of Guangdong, Chen Yu (陈 郁), proposed a development of the then fast-growing city through the subway with two lines. Contrary to initial fears (the city is located in the Pearl River Delta ) proved the underground in secret exploratory drilling to be sufficiently stable. 1965 began the construction of an eight -kilometer-long tunnel, which in view of the currently broken Vietnam War as an air raid shelter would have to serve. But the realization was already in the construction phase plug and was only pursued further since 1984.

The first section of Line 1 was put into operation on 28 June 1997. After Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin, it is the fourth subway system in mainland China.

On 28 June 1999, the line 1 was completed. Since then, it connects the southwest of the city with the city center and the East Railway Station (广州 东 站). On December 29, 2002 was followed by the line 2, which crosses the city in a north-south direction. A second north-south line that connects also the Guangzhou airport to the north of the city, went on 26 December 2005, the line 3 in operation. On November 8, 2010 was the ATM line, fully automatically operated cable car in operation in order to connect the new business district Zhujiang (珠江 新城). On 3 December 2010 the suburb of Foshan (佛山) received by the port Guangfo line. Guǎngfó (广佛) is a portmanteau word from Guangzhou and Foshan.

Line network

The metro in Guangzhou currently includes (2011) eight lines with a total of 144 stations.

One of the lines is as a cable car (automated people mover; APM ) is executed. With the exception of this APM - line all lines are included in a composite system. A transition between the different lines is possible.

From the APM line exist at the termini direct transitions to line 3; here, however, a new ticket is required.

Rates

The tariff is path-dependent and ranges from ¥ 2 for short distances (travel one or two stops) to ¥ 14 trips to the airport cost an additional ¥ 5 surcharge.

Basically, two types of tickets can be distinguished:

  • Single tickets ( RFID chips )
  • Rechargeable RFID smart cards ( Yáng cheng Tong ;羊城通). The latter are, since 2010 also in other cities of the Pearl River Delta and can be used as a cash card at selected stores.

Expansion plans

Two lines are currently under construction: Line 6 ( 41.9 km, 32 stations ) will be a second east-west line, the line 9 (20,1 km, 8 stations ) will connect the northwest of the city. The completion of this project is targeted for 2015.
