History

Dalian had an extensive tram network during the first half of the 20th century. The first line was opened on September 25, 1908 and 1950 reached the net with 11 lines of a length of 65.9 km. After 1950 the large population growth in Dalian swelled the road, so this increasingly hindered the trams. The traffic authority of the city therefore decided to reduce the network, and set up in 1980 after and after the operation, a total of eight tram lines. During this time, the first plan for a subway system was formed.

However, the setting of tram lines could not solve the problems associated with the continued growing traffic problems such as traffic congestion and air pollution. The tram network was now shrunk to three lines. The old lines could not be reopened because they have already been taken over by bus routes. The Department of Transportation tried eco-friendly trolleybus lines introduce: in addition to a first 1960 opened today 7.5km line from the station to Malan space followed in 1977 a second line from the station to the south on the route of the former tram line 6 trolleybuses remained but equally as the other buses stuck in traffic. Instead of the expansion of the trolleybus network was therefore proposed in 1987 a 82.4 km long separated from the street rail-based public transport system for the first time in the structure plan 1990-2010. The first tram line was 202 according to the model of the tunnel route Milchbuck Schwamendingenstrasse tram Zurich rebuilt and put into operation in 1999.

In 2000, a master plan 2000-2020 was created, tram, subway, rapid transit contains system and regional services, the rapid transit system in relation to the station intervals of a commuter train, but on a newly constructed track with metro is to operate trains. In September 2000, the construction of the nearly 50 -kilometer line 3, which connects downtown with the Dalian Development Area and the beach in Jinshitan began. The sea trials began in October 2002 and May 2003, the normal operations began, in 2004 followed by the extension to Dalian Railway Station. This line was complemented by a line designated as 7 Zweigstrecke to Jinzhou, which was opened on 28 December 2008.

In June 2009 the company began the construction of leading through the downtown subway lines 1 and leading to the North station, sports center and airport metro line 2, which should be opened originally in 2012. A number of Tunneleinstürzen in March 2010 led to a temporary halt to construction. The opening has been postponed to 2014. With the 2015 to be opened elevated train line 4, the route network to grow to a length of 58.1 km.
