Gyula Zsivótzky

Gyula Zsivótzky [ ɟulɒ ʒivo ʦki ː ] (* February 25, 1937 in Budapest, † September 29, 2007 ) was a Hungarian hammer thrower. His greatest achievement was winning the gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City.

Zsivótzky won his first major international success at the European Athletics Championships in 1958, where he finished third. In the following years he was able to secure at European Championships still number 1 and 2. Even more successful he was in the Olympics. After two silver medals in Rome in 1960 and in Tokyo in 1964, he won the gold medal at the Games in 1968. Throughout his career, he set two world records.

After his career in 1973 he joined a sports studies and then worked in the fashion and apparel industry.

1965 was Zsivótzky "Hungarian Sportsman of the Year ", In 2004 he was elected to the circle of the twelve Hungarian "Sportsman of the nation".

Zsivótzky was married to high jumper Magdolna Komka and has two sons, the football player Gyula Zsivótzky ( b. 1966 ), who now coaches the Hungarian Under-17 national team. His second son Attila Zsivóczky (* 1977) is a successful decathlete.

The Hungarian Hammer Throw Olympic champion died in 2007 at the age of 70 years in Budapest cancer.
