H. C. Hansen

Hans Christian Svane Hansen ( born November 8, 1906 in Aarhus, † February 19, 1960 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish social democratic politician.

Early years

Hansen learned printer and was active early in the Danish trade union work. In 1929 he became secretary of the youth wing of the Danish Social Democrats and in 1933 its chairman. In 1936 he was the Folketing, the Danish parliament, elected. After the German occupation of Denmark, he went into hiding and was out of there a newspaper.

Time as leaders

Already in the first Danish post-war government, he held from May 5 to 7 November 1945, the Minister of Finance. The same position which he held again on 13 November 1947 to 16 September 1950. In the government of Prime Minister Hans Hedtoft he was from 1953 to 1958 the Danish foreign minister. After the sudden death of the government, he took over on 1 February 1955, the Prime Minister's Office. In the same year he was also President of the Danish Social Democrats party.

Hansen wanted to lead his country into the newly founded European Economic Community; but as the other Scandinavian countries had no interest in the EEC, Denmark became a member of the Nordic Council and the European Free Trade Association.

Until his death by cancer remained Hansen Prime Minister and party president of the Danish Social Democrats.
