Niels Neergaard

Niels Thomasius Neergaard (* June 27, 1854 in Ugilt, Hjørring, † September 2, 1936 in Copenhagen) was a Danish politician and Prime Minister.

Family, study and career

The son of the late 1863 Folketing MPs Peter Neeregaard holds a degree in history, economics and political science in Christianshavn, from which he graduated in 1879 with a master's degree in history and in 1881 the state exam in political science. After traveling abroad to England and France, he was from 1882 to 1884 assistant of a life insurance company. He then worked for several years editor of newspapers before he was director of the 1897 Nordic Life Insurance Company ( Nordisk Livsforsikrings Aktieselskab ).

He also worked as a historian. His 1889 book, published in June Under basic Loven, s foreign af det danske Stilling Folks politiske history from 1848 to 1866 has long been a standard work for the Danish history from 1848 to 1866.

Political career

Member of Parliament

His political career began in 1887 with the first election for members of Parliament the Folketing. There he represented initially until 1890, the Liberal Party ( Venstre ). In 1892 he was re-elected MP for the country Sting, where he represented from 1898 to 1932 the electoral district of Ebeltoft.

In 1901 he became chairman of Venstre Group in the county council.

Minister and Head of Government 1908/1909

On 24 June 1908 he was appointed Finance Minister of Konseilspräsident Jens Christian Christensen for the first time. This office he held until October 12, 1908.

After Christensen had to withdraw because of a corruption scandal surrounding his Minister of Justice Peter Adler Alberti, accused of the embezzlement of 18 million crowns, and was later sentenced to several years in prison, Neergaard was appointed by King Frederick VIII on 12 October 1908 successor. During his last until August 16, 1909 term of office, he was also Minister of Defence.

After his resignation as Konseilspräsident he was appointed by his successor Ludvig Holstein - Ledreborg finance minister in the new cabinet. The management of the Treasury, he took over again on 5 July 1910 to 21 June 1913 in the government of Klaus Berntsen.

Prime Minister from 1920 to 1924 and Minister of Finance

After the constitutional crisis Easter 1920, the so-called Påskekrisen, which was triggered by the resignation of the Government Carl Theodor Zahle and the establishment of the interim government of Otto love and Michael Pedersen Friis by King Christian X, he was on 5 May in 1920 by King at the head of government appointed.
