Hamm–Warburg railway

The railway line Hamm- Warburg is a 131 km long railway main line in Westphalia. It is part of the mid - Germany connection and is operated inter alia by InterCity trains from the Ruhr Kassel, Erfurt and Berlin. In addition, there is dense freight and regional transport.

The main intermediate stops are in Soest, Lippstadt and Paderborn. The Altenbeken train station is also a major transfer hubs. In the Warburg Friedrich -Wilhelms- Northern Railway connects to Kassel.

Between Hamm and Paderborn, the route is equipped with automatic train and partially approved for speeds up to 200 km / hr.

Course

From Hamm to Paderborn the connection is relatively flat and curved arm through the southern Westphalian Bay to the east. It runs roughly parallel to the river Lippe and the historic Hellweg, the forerunner of the Federal Highway 1 in Soest, the side route from Hagen is taken. From there it continues on Bad Sass village, Lippstadt, Geseke and Salzkotten to Paderborn.

From here the route takes on the character of a middle mountain railway. With a long ascent and over the viaducts at Neuenbeken and Altenbeken train Altenbeken node is reached in the northwest of Eggegebirge. With a track triangle routes to Hannover and to Kreiensen are connected.

From Altenbeken the route turns southeast. The new Eggetunnel Willebadessen is achieved. In the former Nörde station which also former railway timber Minden- Scherfede led under this connection through. Shortly before Warburg meets the Upper Ruhrtalbahn ( here in the Valley of Diemel ) on it. From Warburg, the Friedrich -Wilhelms Northern Railway connects to Kassel.

History

The construction of this line had been decided between the states of Prussia, to which belonged Westphalia, and Hesse-Cassel, which lay between Westphalia and the Prussian heartland. Between Paderborn and Willebadessen a more direct route over Lichtenau was provided. However, Prussia was awarded the concession to the private " Cologne - Minden -Thuringian - Link Railway Company ( KMTVEG ) ". This was overwhelmed with the crossing of the Eggegebirge and the then planned tunnel ( " Old Railroad " ) and was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1848. The State Royal Westphalian Railway Company took over the project, replaced the tunnel through an above-ground tour of Altenbeken and opened the connection in stages from 1850 to 1853:

  • Hamm- Paderborn on October 1, 1850
  • Warburg border March 28, 1851
  • Paderborn- Warburg July 22, 1853

The popularly called the route Altenbeken Warburg Kanonenbahn ( against the Hessen).

Together with the Friedrich- Wilhelms- Northern Railway and the Thuringian railway so there was a continuous path between Westphalia and Halle / Leipzig Erfurt, which was independent of the Kingdom of Hanover. Over the next quarter of a century he has been to 1872, further reduced by the Halle- Kassel Railway via Nordhausen and until 1878 the Solling web over Northeim. The track has become an important east-west connection.

On 20 December 1901, west of the station Altenbeken took a serious railway accident when a passenger train on the breakdown of D 31 to Berlin ascended.

However, the freight ran until 1945 from Altenbeken to a large extent on Northeim and Nordhausen to Halle and Leipzig. After the Second World War, the North-South traffic increased so much that the Hanoverian Southern Railway Hannover -Göttingen -Kassel was chronically overloaded. To relieve a connecting curve 1958 ( " Altenbekener curve" ) was established in Altenbeken, the rides Hannover -Kassel enabled without changing direction.

In December 1970, the electrification of the line from Hamm Warburg was completed to Kassel, the traveling time of D- trains decreased from 156 minutes to 140 minutes. Since not enough heavy electric locomotives were available, freight trains were covered in 1973, steam locomotives DB Class 44.

Because of a slope Rutsches between Willebadessen and Neuenheerse in the spring of 1988, the section between Altenbeken and Warburg was blocked for weeks, the long-distance trains were diverted over the train track Göttingen- ground field. After repairing the damage, the passage of this route section was only possible with a slow speed, the risk of slipping slope was monitored from the interlocking of Willebadessen by video camera.

It was planned to extend the connection from Hamm to an intercity route Ruhr -Kassel ( -Munich).

The track was also included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 1985. This meant west of Paderborn mainly on the expansion of existing route. In section Hamm Paderborn early 1990s began first construction. In particular, level crossings have been eliminated. On 26 July 1991, the headquarters of the German Federal Railways issued the design contract for the section between Paderborn and Kassel.

From May 23 1993 to May 28, 1994, the section Soest- Paderborn was completely blocked in order to expand the range to 200 km / hr. The long-distance trains were diverted at this time on the Senne -Bahn, between Soest and Paderborn wrong several direct bus routes as rail replacement bus service. During the one-year construction period was worked one side between Paderborn and Geseke, so getting one track was available as a construction track, on which also the daily freight transport could be driven to the Geseker cement plants. To date, however, all crossings are still not been replaced, so that this speed may only be driven on short pieces. Between Paderborn and Warburg as well as on the subsequent route to Kassel extensive Neutrassierungen include necessary the straightening of the Benhauser bow and the curve at Hümme.

In August 1997, work on a 12.85 km long realignment and the Eggetunnel began to drive around an endangered by landslides area. This section was from 1988 under constant surveillance and could be traveled only 50 km / hr. The new section was put into operation on 12 December 2003; simultaneously the Willebadessen station was reactivated. In the project invested collar and rail 181.5 million euros.

Since the Ruhr is now joined by the high-speed line Cologne-Rhine/Main with southern Germany and the long-distance transport on the mid - Germany connection for various reasons poorly developed, further expansion is in sight.

Service offer

Very long dominated express and express trains in individual timetable documents the long-distance traffic on the track until 1990. On the trains coaches were often set that were classified mainly in Soest and Altenbeken in other long-distance trains to the passengers reaching as many destinations to change trains to enable. About the track also went interzonal pairs, as well as the D 197/198 Mönchengladbach -Leipzig and the D 1452/1453 Dusseldorf -Karl- Marx-Stadt. More destinations for trains running on the route E and D trains were heading east Berlin Stadtbahn, Hall, Walk Ried, Göttingen, Bebra and Munich.

From 1973, the DB in 1971 successfully launched IC network tried to supplement with secondary lines. Between the Ruhr and Bebra wrong from the summer schedule three DC train pairs of " intercity complement system." They were given the name " Diemel country ", " Eggeland " and " Lips Land ". But since these trains did not trigger the expected demand, the IC feeder service has been set for the summer of 1976.

As of 1990, the Federal Railroad began its new product Inter Regio, to reach new customers, the fast trains expected in the clock traffic with short travel times and superior comfort. This was the time of the D and E trains on the route over. The new inter-regional trains rolled first in a two -hour intervals from Duisburg and Hamm Warburg to Bebra. Due to the German unit, the IR line could be 20 to east across Thuringia extended until Chemnitz little later. Through the use of control wagon type Bimdzf the time-consuming need to change locomotives in Hamm was eliminated starting in 1996.

With the abolition of the product Interregio the IR trains were used on the mid - Germany connection as a color- converted intercity sets from 2002, in the time from 2002 to 2007 up to three couples went as ICE T with tilting technology. By 2009, individual IC pairs of trains were canceled with each timetable change, so that a clock traffic on the IC line 51 from Dusseldorf to Stralsund is no longer recognizable and large gaps are created in the long-distance range. Since December 2010, National Rail the remaining IC trains again two ICE pairs. Termini of the long-distance trains to the east are Leipzig and Dresden, an ICE train pair runs to and from Munich.

The regional traffic on the route is served by the EMS flare - RB 89 as a line of Hellweg network. The RB 89 runs every half hour between Paderborn and Hamm. This leaves every hour with a tensile member from Bielefeld and Münster. Every two hours, the RB 89 of Paderborn continues to Warburg with a direct connection to the RE 17 to Kassel -Wilhelm height. This two- hourly train serves not the intermediate holding Borgeln, Dedinghausen, Ehringhausen and Scharmede weekend. Due to the cuts of DB long-distance run since the timetable change in December 2010, some features of the RB 89 days in the outlying areas directly from and to Kassel -Wilhelm height.

As the vehicle continued to DB Regio NRW to December 2008 railcar of the 425 series with a top speed of 160 km / h, in the meantime by the EBA reduced to 140 km / h Since December 2008, the Euro train operated after winning the tender, the route with four-part railcar type Stadler FLIRT.

On the track and the NRW - Express from Aachen Hamm wrong to Paderborn with the line designation RE 1 pull trains consist of currently six double -decker cars, with an electric locomotive of the DB class 146.0 for speeds up to 160 km / h mostly covered. The Regional Express runs between Hamm and Paderborn every two hours with stops at Soest and Lippstadt. The first morning train to Paderborn stops at all stations.

Tariff

For the entire public transport is considered in the section from Hamm to Geseke the "Ruhr -Lippe - tariff" of the transport association Ruhr -Lippe. In section Salzkotten - Warburg has the " high pin - Tariff" ( Nahverkehrsverbund Paderborn- Hoexter ) validity. For the border zones Geseke Salzkotten and Paderborn is available in both areas transition rates. Collective space -border shall be the NRW - tariff.
