Geography

Geographical Location

Heemsen located near the natural park Geest and the Natural Park Steinhude approximately midway between Bremen and Hannover on the river Weser. Through the municipal area the Wölpe flows. To the east lies the light moor. The community belongs to the Samtgemeinde Heemsen, which has its headquarters in the town of Rohrsen.

History

Heemsen was first mentioned in documents in 1096. In the municipal area are remains of two hill forts. Near the village Anderten Anderten the castle, which controlled the Reichsweg between the Middle Weser Region direction Fallingbostel was. About 1 km south-east of the town Heemsen are on the road to Steimbke in formerly swampy area the remains of Bruns castle whose walls are still partially preserved. Excavations of 1907 in the main castle suggest an origin in the 9th century.

Religions

The Evangelical Lutheran St. Michaelis Church in Heemsen was merged on 1 February 2012 with the St. John's church in Drakenburg to Evangelical Lutheran Church congregation Drakenburg - Heemsen.

Incorporations

The places Anderten and Gades frets were incorporated on March 1, 1974.

Mayor

In the current municipal election period (2011-2016) Henry Koch ( CDU) acts as the honorary mayor of the community Heemsen. For full-time mayor of Samtgemeinde Samtgemeinde Heemsen Friedrich- Wilhelm Koop was chosen.

Blazon: Under a red shield main saltire Argent bargeboards with horse heads, split of green and gold, a front at half height and above gezinnter tower with green door opening and silver bars, behind a turned-over to the right rotbezungter wolf's head.
