Henry Abel Smith

Sir Henry Abel Smith KCMG KCVO DSO ( born March 8, 1900 in London, † 24 January 1993 at Wellington Lodge, Winkfield, Berkshire ) was a British officer and Governor of Queensland.

Life

Henry Abel Smith was born the son of Francis Abel Smith and his wife, Madeline St. Maur Seymour. His grandparents were Henry Abel -Smith and Elizabeth Mary Pym, his great- grandparents were Francis Pym and Lady Lucy Leslie - Meville, daughter of John Leslie - Melville, 9th Earl of Leven.

After graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, he became in 1919 an officer of the Royal Horse Guards in December. He served in World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. In 1950 he went with the rank of colonel in retirement.

On 24 October 1931 he married Lady May Cambridge, born Princess of Teck, the niece of the British King George V and his wife Mary of Teck, and great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. They had three children.

Sir Henry was appointed Governor of Queensland and held that post of 18 March 1958 to 18 March in 1966. As Governor, he enjoyed great prestige among the population. On the day of his departure from office, the population formed a line formation on his way to the airport in Brisbane.

He died on 24 January 1993. The funeral took place at St. George 's Chapel at Windsor Castle instead. His grave is located on the Frogmore Royal Burial Ground. His wife survived him by only six months.
