Hermann Hänggi

Hermann Hänggi (* October 15, 1894 in Mümliswil, † November 21, 1978 in Burgdorf ) was a Swiss gymnast and two-time Olympic champion.

Sports

Hänggi was the champion in artistic gymnastics at the Swiss Federal Gymnastics Festival in 1922 and also 1925. During the Olympic Summer Games in Amsterdam in 1928, he participated in all seven competitions in gymnastics. He won the individual competition in the pommel horse, the silver medal in the individual all-around and was third on the parallel bars. With the Swiss team, he also won the team all-around. In the stretch he was fourth behind the ten- years-younger teammates Georges Kitty, who won the competition, and the thirteen years younger Eugen Mack, who won the bronze medal. In 1930 he was total and several individual winner at the French Federal Gymnastics Festival in Algiers.

Personal

Hermann Hänggi completed a commercial apprenticeship in the comb factory Mümliswil AG and Von Roll AG in Klus. From 1914-1918 he served as a sergeant in the Swiss Army, then he learned in Champagne French and worked up to 1923 in Yverdon. In 1923 he took a job as an assistant accountant at the box cheese factory Alpina AG in Burgdorf, from 1943 he was authorized signatory of Alpina AG and after his retirement in 1964-1972 Secretary of the Board. On September 27, 1924 he married Frieda Gabi. From this marriage two daughters were born.
