Hispar Pass

The Hispar La, on German Hispar Pass is a high mountain pass, with a vertex at 5,128 meters above sea level in the Karakoram mountains of Pakistan. The pass is named after the village Hispar, located at the end of the Hispar glacier.

From Hispar Pass the Hispar Glacier flows to the west and the Biafo Glacier to the south-east, so that the fit of these two glaciers can be crossed. These glaciers Traverse is one of the longest outside the polar regions. East of Hispar Pass is the so -called Lukpe Lawo (Snow Lake ), which is not a lake, but a 1600 meters deep and about 16 km long glacier basin. The depth of this layer of ice should be unique outside the polar region.

Location of the passport

The pass can only be achieved by multi-day treks. The 63 km long glacier Biafo connects to the ball on the 49 km long Hispar Glacier at over 100 km. The glaciers also connect the two ancient mountain kingdoms, Nagar and Baltistan in the west to the east.

The vollvergletscherte Hispar Pass is located in the northwestern part of the Karakorum and connects the Hispar Muztagh, part of the Karakoram main chain in the north with the Spantik - Sosbun Mountains in the south. The adjoining the west Hispar Glacier feeds the Hispar River, which flows west towards the Hunza Valley. The Hunza Valley limits the Hispar Muztagh in the west and north and is accessed through the Karakoram Highway. East of Hispar Muztagh and beyond the Biafo Glacier, the mountain chain Panmah Muztagh.

The pass was overcome since ancient times by the two mountain kingdoms in either warlike intent or for sportive encounters in the game of polo. The deserted region Biafo Hispar is the refuge of wild animals such as the Himalajabärs, the mountain goat, markhor and the snow leopard.

Bill Tilman, an English mountaineer and yachtsman is said to have discovered on his expedition to the highest glaciers in the world in 1937 in this area footprints of the legendary Yeti.

Surrounding mountains

The surrounding mountains on Hispar Pass rich mostly over 7,000 m Height: Not far from the glacier Hispar the Distaghil Sar is ( 7885 m); Kunyang Chhish, ( 7852 m ), the unclimbed south face is considered to be one of the last problems in high-altitude mountaineering; Kanjut Sar ( 7760 m); Trivor ( 7577 m); Pumari Chhish ( 7492 m) and the Yutmaru Sar ( 7330 m).

In the vicinity of Biafo glacier there are the mountains Baintha Brakk ( Ogre ) ( 7285 m), which the Latok group ( 7145 m), Lukpe Lawo Brakk ( 6593 m) and Uzun Brakk ( 6422 m).
