Horten Line

The railway line Skoppum -Horten ( norw Hortenlinjen ) was a seven- kilometer-long railway line in Vestfold in Norway. It led originally by Skoppum to Horten.

History

In the 1870s, economic growth in Norway was followed by a demand for rail services. That there would be a railroad through Vestfold, lay out of any doubt. Since the coastal cities, however, were connected by good shipping lines, the line was further planned inland.

For the Vestvoldbane, also called Jarlsbergbanen, it was decided in June 1875 that it should lead from Drammen to Skien. Furthermore, it was decided that a branch line from Skoppum should be built according to Horten. It was built in the same track gauge of 1067 mm and officially put into operation on 13 October 1881. A day later, on October 14, King Oscar II came to visit. It rails were used with a meter weight of 19.84 kg. The conversion to standard gauge took place on 3 October 1949 was electrified the route on 11 December 1957.

In the 1950s, the decline of freight traffic began. There were supporting cables, transports steel plates for shipbuilding and scrap also feed were loaded.

Rolling stock

From the opening of the line until 1927, the same vehicles were used as the main route, which was transported by steam locomotives. From 1927 Type 1 came in passenger gasoline railcar type bmb used. A total of 18 such cars procured NSB, four of which drove in Vestfold. Another vehicle was added after the Eidsfossbane was decommissioned in 1938. The railcars were biaxial and had 30 seats. 1946 were 13 pairs of trains on the track in use. These features were all following the ferry to Moss.
