Hunawihr

Hunawihr ( German Hunawihr ) is a commune with 590 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. She is a member of the Association of Municipalities Ribeauvillé. On the basis of the intact townscape Hunawihr was included in the list of most beautiful villages in France.

Hunawihr is located in the Upper Rhine Plain between Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé on the eastern slopes of the Vosges Mountains, surrounded by vineyards on the Alsace Wine Route (Route des vins ). The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park of Ballons des Vosges.

In the 7th century, today's Hunawihr seat of the tribal Lord Huno. About his wife Huna exists the legend that they did the laundry for the sick at the well below the church. Her grave in the village church developed over the course of the Middle Ages to a place of pilgrimage. 1520 Huna was canonized.

Attractions

  • In the small, castle-like Gothic church St.Jakobus (St. Jacques) from the 14th century ( in the 16th century renovated) has been expanded several times the church with the goal of creating a sanctuary. The lower floor of the massive church tower was equipped with frescoes, a late Gothic choir and a stone pulpit. The defensive wall built in the 12th century provided the population protection in attacks. The church is an interdenominational church: see Catholic and Protestant services are held in it. The church clock has only one hand, a decorated with grapes hour hand. The church is classified as a monument historique since 1929.
  • Just off the main road a little stork park is located ( Parc des Cigognes ).
