Ilion, Greece

Ilio (Greek Ίλιο, often also called Ilion [ Ίλιον ], former name Nea Liosia [ Νέα Λιόσια ] ) is one of the suburbs of the Greek capital Athens.

Geography

Ilion is located 8 km northwest of the center of Athens and is bordered to the north and east Agii Anargiri - Kamatero, to the south and to the west by Peristeri Petroupoli. It is located south of the mountain Egaleo and the Attiki Odos.

History

The area was used for agriculture until the 19th century. In particular, the rural exodus in the 1950s and 1960s brought rapid population growth: Still in 1951, the municipality (then Nea Liosia ) only 5,460 inhabitants; in a decade, the population increased six-fold by 1961 to almost 31.810 inhabitants, a percentage increase of 492 %.

In September 1994, the city officially got the name Ilion, after the city council had decided to accept the original name of the city from the middle of the last century. Until then it was called Nea Liosia.
