Geography

Local structure

The municipality Illingen next to the eponymous district Illingen includes the districts Hirzweiler, Hüttigweiler, Uchtelfangen, Welschbach and Wustweiler. They were up to the administrative and territorial reform in 1974 independent communities.

History

Illingen can look back on more than 1100jährige history and is today considered the center of the Illtal. First documented in 893 AD, Illingen was about 450 years imperial rule of the Lords of Kerpen, who resided in the castle on the water Ill. Their rule ended with the outbreak of the French Revolution and the ensuing persecution of nobles, before eventually had to flee the family of Kerpen.
