Inkster is a city in Wayne County of the U.S. state of Michigan. At the 2000 census, the city had 30,115 inhabitants.

Geography

Inkster is located about 20 km west of Detroit. On the square city Garden City to the northwest, Dearborn Heights to the northeast, east and southeast and Westland in the west and southwest. Dearborn is located just east of a small to Dearborn Heights belonging strip, Taylor is just south of it. The Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Romulus are located southwest and Wayne is located west of belonging to the Westland areas.

History

The area was first settled by immigrants in 1825. A post office named Moulin Rouge was founded in December 1857. Robert Inkster, a Scotsman from Lerwick, Shetland Islands, where he ran in the early 1860s, a steam sawmill at today Inkster Road near Michigan Avenue. The post office was renamed in July 1863 in Inkster. The village was in 1878 one of the Michigan Central Railroad Station. It was incorporated as a village in 1964 and as a city in 1926.

The per capita income for the city was $ 16,711. 15.2 % of families and 19.5 % of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.8 % under age 18 and 13.4 % of those aged 65 years or older.
