Interstate 68

Interstate 68 (abbreviated I-68 ) is an Interstate Highway in the United States. It connects Interstate 79 near Morgantown, West Virginia with Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 522 near Hancock, Maryland.

History

Originally the designation Interstate 68 for the Freeway of U.S. Highways 50 and 301 between Washington DC and Annapolis provided which is today recognized as Interstate 595. On 7 June 1989, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials approved the designation of Interstate 68 for the distance between Morgantown and Hancock.

Course

West Virginia

The Interstate 68 south branches of the Monongahela River from Interstate 79 in northeast, and crosses after 1.6 miles U.S. Highway 119 Interstate happens in the northwest of the city first and then the Morgantown Morgantown Municipal Airport. West of the village of Cheat Lake the road crosses the same lake and rises on the northern foothills of the Cheat Canyon. The I-68 runs south on Coopers Rock State Forest along. In the south of the city of Bruceton Mills, the road crosses first the Big Sandy Creek and then strikes the West Virginia State Route 26 east of Bruceton Mills it passes through rural and mountainous area. The Interstate passes through the places Brando Ville in the north and in the south of Hazelton, before it reaches the border with Maryland.

Maryland

In Maryland, Interstate 68 extends further by mountainous terrain and carries on the whole route, the term National Freeway. Friendsville is the first city that is passed from I- 68 in Marayland. To the west of the city, the road first meets the Maryland State Route 42 and crossed after the Youghiogheny River. From the town of Keyser's Ridge run the U.S. Highways 40 and 129, together with the Interstate on a road. North of the Savage River State Forests leaves the U.S. 129 route already again. By crossing the Savage Mountain Interstate 68 reaches the Allegany County. It forms a southern bypass around the city of Frostburg and meets the Maryland State Routes 736 and 36

East of Frostbrug the road follows the valley of Braddock Run and crosses the Maryland State Route 658 after crossing the Haystack Mountain Interstate reaches the city of Cumberland. The I-68 runs a common route with the U.S. Highways 40 and 220 through the town and crosses in the center of the Wills Creek just before its confluence with the Potomac River. Interstate 68 leaves the city in a northerly direction, passing to the north the Rocky Gap State Park and Lake Habeeb. To the east of Flintstone crosses the street to Town Creek and the Polish Mountain and passes through the Green Ridge State Forest.

With the crossing of the Sideling Hill Creeks Interstate 68 reaches the Washington County and then crosses the Sideling Hills. It ends after a total of 181 kilometers of the route of the Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 522 in the north of Hancock.
