Islamorada is a town in Monroe County in the U.S. state of Florida with 6,119 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

The municipality has an area of 28 km length. In the north east borders Islamorada Tavernier and on the southwest by the city of Layton. Key West and Miami are both approximately 110 km away.

History

On September 2, 1935 here the railway accident Islamorada occurred. The community was founded on 4 November 1997.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 6,119 inhabitants distributed to 5,692 households. The population density was 332.6 inh. / Km ². 96.5 % of the population were white, 0.7 % African American, 0.4% Native American and 0.6 % Asian Americans. 0.8 % were members of other ethnic groups and 1.0% of different ethnicities. 9.6% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 33.2 % of all households lived in 18.6 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 58.0 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.07 persons and the average family size is 2.57 people.

15.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 14.7% were 20-39 years old, 37.4 % were 40-59 years old and 32.5 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 52 years. 51.8 % of the population were male and 48.2 % female.

The average annual income was $ 66,708, while 13.7 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 93.28 % of the population spoke Spanish 5.39% and 1.32 % had a different mother tongue.
