James Henry Craig

General Sir James Henry Craig KB ( * 1748 in Gibraltar, † January 12, 1812 in London) was a British officer and colonial administrator.

As the Netherlands in 1795 fell under Napoleon's revolutionary government, hereditary stadtholder William V of Orange- Diez went into exile in England. A fleet under General Sir James Craig was successfully sent Cape Town to occupy the Dutch Cape Colony before the French. The colony was not returned after the surrender in the Saldanhabucht to 1802 back to the Netherlands.

In 1805 he was appointed leader of an expedition to Italy. The expedition, however, was canceled after the Austrian defeat at the Battle of Ulm.

Craig was 1807-1811 Governor General of the Province of Canada and Governor of Lower Canada. Craig has sought to increase the influence of the English -speaking population in the mainly French- populated Niederkananda. To this end, he replaced the Legislative Assembly by a person appointed by him government and divided the country into counties. In addition, he assisted immigration from Britain and the U.S. in the hope of making the French -born population to a minority.
