János Garay (fencer)

János Garay ( born February 23, 1889 in Budapest, † probably March 30th, 1945 in Mauthausen concentration camp ) was a Hungarian fencer, who was considered one of the world's best saber fencers in the 1920s.

He won at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 with the Hungarian team a silver medal in the team competition and the bronze medal in the individual competition in saber fencing. Four years later, at the Games in Amsterdam in 1928, he became Olympic champion with the team. In addition, he won the saber 1925 and 1930 the individual title at the European Championships in 1930, he was also with the team European champion.

After the occupation of his homeland by Germany during the Second World War János Garay counted in 1944 to around 437,000 Hungarian Jews who were deported during the Holocaust in the Nazi concentration and extermination camps. He probably died in March 1945 at the Mauthausen concentration camp.

János Garay was recorded in 1990 in the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Netanya. In his hometown of Budapest a school bears his name.
