Jean-Pierre Côté

Jean -Pierre Côté, PC, OC ( born January 9, 1926 in Montreal, † July 10, 2002 ) was a Canadian politician. From 1963 to 1972 he was a liberal member of the Canadian House of Commons and had during that time held several ministerial posts. After that he was senator until 1978, after he served until 1984 as vice- governor of the province of Quebec.

Biography

Côté trained as a dental technician at the Polytechnic School of Dental Medicine in Montreal. During his studies he played briefly in the Canadian Football Montreal Alouettes, later he opened his own practice in the neighboring city of Longueuil. There he collected from 1960 to 1963 the first political experience as a member and president of the school board. As a candidate of the Liberal Party, he stepped up to the general election in 1963 and sat for the constituency Longueuil against incumbent Pierre Sévigny by. 1965 and 1968 he succeeded each re-election.

The Federal Cabinet of Lester Pearson Côté was from December 1965 to July 1968 Postmaster General. Pearson's successor, Pierre Trudeau then entrusted him with the management of the Ministry of National income. After he had been in 1971 Minister without portfolio from September 1970 to June, he again took over the Post Office. On September 1, 1972 Trudeau appointed him a senator. Finally, he was sworn in on 27 April 1978 by Governor General Jules Léger as Lieutenant Governor of Quebec. This representative office he held until 28 March 1984.
