Joachim Ernst, Duke of Anhalt

Duke Joachim Ernst von Anhalt ( born January 11, 1901 in Dessau, † February 18, 1947 in the Soviet Special Camp No. 2 in Buchenwald middle names: Karl Albrecht Wilhelm Leopold Friedrich Moritz Erdmann ) was nominally the last Duke of Anhalt, by virtue of its minority but never ruled themselves. He was the only German Federal proclaimed Prince born in the 20th century.

Duke under regency

Joachim Ernst was the rightful heir of the Duke of Anhalt Eduard von Anhalt. His father died on September 13, 1918, but Joachim Ernst could not follow him to the throne because he was underage. His uncle, Prince Aribert, took over the regency, however, saw himself compelled to waive on behalf of the Duke Joachim Ernst Anhalt and the entire royal family to the throne in the wake of revolutionary action on 12 November 1918. This ended in central Germany there has been continuing since the eleventh century reign of Ascanians.

Life, persecution and late honor

The Duchy of Anhalt went to the republican form of government as a Free State Anhalt within the German Reich. After 1918 the castle Ballenstedt remained on the resin as the residence of the family of Anhalt. Here also all the children of the Duke were born.

Joachim Ernst was arrested in January 1944 and spent the Dachau concentration camp. Although he had already become a Nazi opponents during his incarceration in the Dachau concentration camp, the former Duke was arrested again after the end of the Nazi dictatorship - this time of the Soviet occupation troops in him to the NKVD internment camp Buchenwald, the former concentration camp Weimar, einlieferten. Here he died, seriously ill from exhaustion as a result of storage conditions, at the age of 46 years on 18 February 1947.

On February 18, 2007 the Duke Joachim Ernst 60.Todestag, was symbolically taken on the grounds of the camp Buchenwald near a memorial earth from the cemetery and placed in an urn with his name. This was brought by members of the Duke family to Ballenstedt and buried there. His final resting place is located on the edge of Ballenstedter castle courtyard, where a large memorial stone at him.

Marriage and issue

Duke Joachim Ernst von Anhalt was married twice:

  • On March 3, 1927 he married Elisabeth Strickrodt (* September 3, 1903; † January 5, 1971 ); 1929, the marriage ended in divorce.
  • On October 15, 1929, the marriage with Editha von Stephani ( born August 20, 1905 as Editha Marwitz, † 22 February 1986) was carried out.
