At the Giro he missed the overall victory by a mere 16 seconds after he was gone from the lead in the final time trial. In the Vuelta a España, he took over already on the fourth stage of the overall lead, which he was able to expand by victories in three heavy mountain top finishes and also about the time trial, he could yet save one second ahead in contrast to the Giro. On the 17th stage, in profile very spectacular, from sporting history here but even more, he lost more than two minutes for Alberto Contador and Alejandro Valverde, so that he had to ultimately settle for third place overall. End of the season he was winning the Tour of Lombardy to still clinch their first win at one of the monuments and at the same time thus securing the first place in the final of the UCI World Tour 2012. 2013 he won a stage in each of the Tour of Oman and Tirreno- Adriatico and denied its only the second Tour de France. Here, he was third overall behind Chris Froome and Nairo Quintana. Thus he once stood at all three major country tours on the podium.
