Joel Gregory Mason ( born March 12, 1912 in Iron River, Michigan, USA, † October 31, 1995 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan ) was a U.S. American football player and basketball coach. He has played with the Green Bay Packers in the National Football League ( NFL).

Playing career

Joel Mason studied at Western Michigan University and, after graduating basketball coach at a high school. Since it was his goal to play professional American football, he took part in a 1939 trial of the Green Bay Packers and was awarded a professional contract. Even before the beginning of the turn gave the Packers Mason from the trained by Ernie Nevers Chicago Cardinals.

After a game year in Chicago to Mason the Boston Bears followed, a team that was located in the American Football League ( AFL). The team existed only in 1940 and had to stop the operation of gambling due to financial problems afterwards. Mason then moved to league rivals Milwaukee Chiefs in order in the same year to be still working in other teams who played in lower leagues.

Joel Mason moved back to the Green Bay Packers, who were coached by Curly Lambeau before the 1942 season. As a wide receiver, he was employed with Don Hutson on offense the Packers and had to exercise functions as a blocker in the first place. In 1944, the Packers were able to qualify for the NFL playoff. Opponents in the final were managed by Steve Owen New York Giants. The Packers won the game 14-7. After another year with the Packers game Mason finished his career in 1945. During his football career playing Mason briefly professional basketball at the Sheboygan Red Skins in the National Basketball League.

Coaching career

In 1946, Joel Mason joined as assistant coach of the football team at Wayne State University. A short time later, he took over the post of assistant coach of the basketball team. From 1948 to 1966 he was head coach of this team. Until 1978, he continued to teach at Wayne State University and was also for a time as a golf instructor and sports director. In 1978, he sat down to rest.

Honors

After the 1940 season, Joel Mason was elected team in the 1940 AFL All- League. The Wayne State University took Joel Mason in 1981 in the Wayne State Athletic Hall of Fame.
