John Alexander (politician)

John Alexander ( born July 4, 1951 in Sydney ) is an Australian former tennis player and politician.

Career

Alexander's international career started at the age of 16 years. He came in 1968 at the French Open in the third round at Wimbledon and in the second round. He also won the junior title at Wimbledon in 1968 and celebrated his Davis Cup debut for Australia against the United States.

In 1969 he reached the main draw at Wimbledon the last sixteen and debuted at the Australian Open and the U.S. Open each with a catchment in the second round.

In 1970, he won the junior title at the Australian Open and celebrated his first ATP tournament victory in Kitzbühel with Phil Dent on the side in doubles.

Thus began one of the most successful tennis doubles partnership in the 1970s. Alexander and Dent jointly won 22 ATP tournaments and the 1975 Australian Open and reached the final of the French Open (1975) and Wimbledon (1977).

In the early 1980s, he drew attention in a double with John Fitzgerald on itself. They won the doubles title at the Australian Open in 1982 and the tournaments in Sydney in 1982 and Bristol in 1983.

In individual Alexander was not as successful as in the double, but could nevertheless win seven tournaments and move twice in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

Since 2010 he is a member of the Australian House of Representatives for the Liberal Party of Australia.

Davis Cup

Alexander denied 1968-1982 26 matches in singles and 15 in doubles for the Australian team. He won 17 of 26 and 10 of 15 games.
