John G. Oglesby

John Gillett Oglesby (* March 19, 1878 in Decatur, Illinois, † May 26, 1938 in Elkhart, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1909 and 1913, and again from 1917 to 1921 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Illinois.

Career

John Oglesby was the son of Governor Richard James Oglesby ( 1824-1899 ). About his youth and education, nothing is handed down. He participated as a soldier in the U.S. Army in the Spanish-American War of 1898 in part. Professionally, he worked in the steel industry and as a farmer. Politically, he was like his father, a member of the Republican Party. Between 1905 and 1907 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Illinois.

Oglesby was elected in 1908 on the side of Charles S. Deneen for Lieutenant Governor of Illinois. This post he held between 18 January 1909 and 3 February 1913. In 1912, he lost in the primaries of his party against Barratt O'Hara. Four years later he was re-elected vice-governor of his state. His second term was between 8 January 1917 and 10 January 1921. This time he served under Governor Frank Orren Lowden. During his eight years as lieutenant governor, he was deputy of the governor.

Between 1920 and 1932, Oglesby took part in all Republican National Convention as a delegate. In 1920 he failed in the governor primaries of his party. In 1933 he was a member of the delegation that ratified the 21th Amendment to the Constitution of Illinois. He died on May 26, 1938 near Elkhart, where he was also buried.
