John Patrick Foley

John Patrick Cardinal Foley OESSH ( born November 11, 1935 in Darby, Pennsylvania, USA, † December 11, 2011 ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. He was known as President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications for 20 years head of communications of the Holy See and as the "voice of the Vatican ". From 2007 to 2011 he was the Cardinal Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem.

Life

After studying Catholic theology and journalism Foley received on 19 May 1962 by John Joseph Cardinal Krol of Philadelphia, the sacrament of Holy Orders. In the following years he worked in pastoral ministry and eventually became head of the church newspaper "The Catholic Standard & Times " for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. 1976 Foley was appointed Papal honor prelates.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on April 5, 1984 Titular Archbishop of Neapolis in Proconsulari and appointed him president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. He received his episcopal consecration May 8, 1984 also John Joseph Cardinal Krol; Were co-consecrators Martin Nicholas Lohmuller, Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia, and Thomas Jerome Welsh, Bishop of Allentown.

After the death of John Paul II on 2 April 2005 went out as with all Heads of Departments of the Vatican Codex Iuris Canonici according to his office first. Pope Benedict XVI. however, confirmed him at the beginning of his pontificate in this function. 24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Sebastiano al Palatino in the College of Cardinals. 22 December 2007 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. the Cardinal Grand Master of the Knights tomb. After the dispensation of the resigned for health reasons John Patrick Cardinal Foley on 10 February 2011 as Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem Giuseppe De Andrea was used together with the Governor-General of the Order, Agostino Borromeo, for the meantime as Pontifical Assessor. Benedict XVI. took 29 August 2011 at the Cardinal Foley put forward for health reasons resignation from the office of Cardinal Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy grave in Jerusalem, and appointed the former archbishop of Baltimore, Edwin Frederick O'Brien, as his successor.

The Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Fra ' Matthew Festing, gave Cardinal Foley on April 22, 2010 in Rome, the insignia of Honour and Devotion - Bailli; Foley had been since 2002 chaplain of the Knights of Malta.
