John Smith (Ohio Senator)

John Smith ( * 1735 in Virginia; † 30 July 1824 in St. Francisville, Louisiana) was an American politician of the Democratic- Republican Party. From 1803 to 1808, he sat for the state of Ohio in the U.S. Senate.

Biography

Of his life little is known. To 1735, he was born in Virginia. Who were his parents is unknown. In the 1790s he was a pastor in various Baptist churches in Ohio. He then began to provide military matters. From 1799 to 1803 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the Northwest Territory. In 1802 he was a delegate to the Constituent Assembly of Ohio. After Ohio was admitted in 1803 as a state in the United States, he was one of the first two senators of the State in the Federal Senate. There he remained until 1808. He then moved to St. Francisville, where he died in 1824.
