József Kovács (hurdler)

József Kovács [ jo ː ʒɛf kova ː ʧ ] ( born March 14, 1911 in Budapest, † August 18, 1990 ) was a Hungarian athlete. At a height of 1.84 m his competition weight was 75 kg.

József Kovács reached at the European Championships 1934 in Turin in three disciplines in the final. First, he won the 110- meter hurdles in 14.8 seconds before the German Erwin Wegner in 14.9 seconds. In the 200 - meter race, he finished fourth in 21.7 seconds. With the Hungarian 4 x 100 - meter relay team, he won silver in 41.4 seconds behind the German squadron.

Also at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin started Kovács in several disciplines. In the 400 - meter hurdles in 54.0 seconds, he retired from the semi-finals. With the 4 x 100 - meter relay team he left in the flow. The Hungarian 4 x 400 - meter relay team reached the finals and was in 3:14,8 minutes sixth.

At the European Championships 1938 in Paris Kovács was 53.3 seconds behind the Frenchman Prudent Joye second in the 400 - meter hurdles. With the 4 x 100 - meter relay team he left in the flow.

József Kovács presented at numerous Hungarian records, of which the hurdle records were undercut on both lines and the 400-meter record in the 1950s. His record in the 200 - meter race thought of 1933 to 1964.
