Kamuta Latasi

Sir Kamuta Latasi KCMG, OBE, PC, ( b. 1936 or 1938) is a politician from Tuvalu and former prime minister.

Prime Minister from 1993 to 1996

The landowner has for many years as a representative of the Funafuti Meeting House ( Fale Fono i ). His wife Naama Mateu Latasi was at times also a member of the meeting house.

On December 12, 1993, he won the election for Prime Minister against the incumbent Bikenibeu Paeniu. On December 23, 1996, he was again defeated Paeniu.

As a politician, he was an advocate of republican tendencies, which took him to some distance to the British crown. This was demonstrated during his tenure in a controversy because of the design of the flag of Tuvalu. In 1995, the flag was introduced in 1978 replaced by a new one that was not based on the British, but also showed the islands as stars. Because this flag was never really accepted by the population, were introduced in 1997 a slightly modified version of the old one.

Speaker of Parliament and Awards

After the election of August 2006, he was elected speaker ( House Speaker ) of the meeting house.

For his contributions to the politics of Tuvalu, he has won several awards. In particular, he was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. In addition, he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George and included in the Privy Council.
