Knittlingen is a town in the Enz in Baden- Württemberg, about 20 km north of Pforzheim and 30 km east of Karlsruhe, at the edge of the Kraichgau in the recreation area Stromberg.

Geographical Location

Knittlingen is located at the junction of the Kraichgau in the Stromberg.

Neighboring municipalities are from north to south: Oberderdingen, Bretten (both in Karlsruhe), newcomers, Oelbronn - Duerrn, Maulbronn and star rock (all Enz ).

Boroughs

The city Knittlingen consists of the three districts Knittlingen, Freudenstein - Hohenklingenstrasse and Kleinvillars. The neighborhoods are physically identical to the previous municipalities with corresponding names, their official designation has been made in the form " Knittlingen, ...". The districts also form residential areas within the meaning of Baden-Württemberg municipal code. In Freudenstein - Hohenklingenstrasse district a village is set in the sense of Baden-Württemberg municipal code with private Ortschaftsrat and mayor as its chairman.

For district Freudenstein - Hohenklingenstrasse includes the villages of Freudenstein and Hohenklingenstrasse, both of which are grown together. For district Kleinvillars heard the village Kleinvillars. For Knittlingen district encompasses the City Knittlingen, the homestead Büschlehof and the houses Pflegmühle and Störrmühle. History

The town was founded in the Frankish period is mentioned in the year 843 as " Cnudelingen ". From the possession of various spiritual and secular rulers, including the Margraviate of Baden, the Maulbronn finally emerged as the sole owner.

In 1490, the Roman - German king and later Emperor Maximilian I established the first regularly operated postal routes in Europe, between Innsbruck and the Netherlands. Knittlingen is 1495 and 1499 is as a post office. Abandoned in 1499 as a coaching inn, it was 1563 again station and replaced Diedelsheim in Bretten. The postal service brought a lot of life in the small town.

The city in 1360, 1632 and 1692 each time completely destroyed and had otherwise much to suffer from sieges, fires, looting. Count Palatine Philipp moved from here on May 10, 1534 his troops to Lauffen and involved in the local meadow valley and on the Seugbergen stock. 1632 Knittlingen was burnt down by troops of the Imperial General Ernesto Montecuculi in the Thirty Years' War. The important trade route from Frankfurt via Speyer to Cannstatt ran through Knittlingen.

Knittlingen belonged to the monastery Maulbronn and thus since the beginning of the 16th century Württemberg. Knittlingen 1840 officially received its town charter. From 1806 belonged Knittlingen - like his two neighborhoods - the Upper Office Maulbronn and 1938-1972 to the district of Vaihingen. Since the resolution of this county belongs to the Enz Knittlingen in the district of Karlsruhe.

Spatial development of the municipal area

The present city was re- formed on August 9, 1975 Association of Knittlingen and the community Freudenstein. Already on 15 February 1972, the hitherto separate municipality Kleinvillars was incorporated into Knittlingen. Großvillars, partly belonged until 1972 to Knittlingen, came the same year to the municipality Oberderdingen.

The nave and the tower dates from the 13th century, the choir is late Gothic.

  • Parish Freudenstein

The congregation Freudenstein (about 1,000) includes the districts of Freudenstein and Hohenklingenstrasse the city Knittlingen. The Church of St. Gallus ( as from 1601) was white burg cal fief. The present church was built in 1753. In Hohenklingenstrasse district there is a late Gothic filial church.

  • Parish Kleinvillars

The parish includes the district Kleinvillars Kleinvillars the city Knittlingen. The place is a Waldensian settlement that was built on districts of the city and the community Knittlingen Oelbronn 1699. A church was built in 1737. Politically formed Kleinvillars to 1826 a parish of the neighboring Großvillars, then became an independent municipality. The first reformed church Kleinvillars was incorporated into the Württemberg church in the early 19th century. Since 1876, the site is managed by the neighboring parish Oelbronn.

Train

In Kleinvillars district is the train stop Knittlingen - Kleinvillars. It is located at the Württemberg Western Railway and is from the line S 9 of the Stadtbahn Karlsruhe served.

Education

Knittlingen is school center for the Northwest Enz. With Dr. John's Fist school there is a primary, and junior high school. Thus, students attend from Maulbronn Oelbronn - Duerrn, Star Rock, newcomers, Oetisheim, Kieselbronn and even from Oberderdingen the Knittlinger school center. In the district Freudenstein, there is another elementary school. In addition, there are five kindergartens (two municipal, two Protestant and one Roman Catholic kindergarten).
