Kollumerland c.a.

( Listen / i?) Kollumerland s Nieuwkruisland (also: Kollumerland ca, Frisian: Kollumerlân, Nedersaksisch: Kölmerland s Nijkruusland ) is a municipality of the province of Friesland (Netherlands). It has 12,823 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

Places

The administrative center is the large village of Kollum, which has about 5,600 inhabitants. Location and economic

The municipality is located in the extreme north- east of the province, bordering the province of Groningen. In some villages, no Frisian is spoken, but a related Groningsch the Lower Saxon dialect, including the Kollumerpompsters in Kollumerpomp. Outside the church, about 3.5 km south of Kollum, the small station Buitenpost is located on the railway line Groningen - Leeuwarden. A good road connects with the Kollum 14 km north-west Dokkum, and to the south with the highway between Groningen and Leeuwarden, but which is no highway.

History

  • Kollum originated in the early Middle Ages. It was on the 11th - a settlement along a dike in the bog 13th century. Gradually the marsh was reclaimed and converted into arable and pasture land. In the 17th century a canal was dug from Dokkum to the Wadden Sea for shipping. This channel ran through Kollum what the village for 150 years brought economic prosperity through trade and shipping.
  • ' Kollumerzwaag was first mentioned in 1443 urkündlich. Zwaag, Frisian: sweach, is an old word for: meadow.
  • In Veenklooster'gab it in the 12th century monastery of Premonstratensian canons. This monastery was disbanded after the Reformation in the 16th century. In its place, the manor Fogelsanghstate was built in 1646.
  • In 1580 the polder Nieuw- Kruisland was dammed. In this new country, the villages Kollumerpomp, Munnekezijl and Warfstermolen emerged. At the old sea wall, which was no longer necessary to defend against the sea water, Warfstermolen arose. Inland, there was until the 18th century a barren heath, which was also brought under cultivation; here was, inter alia, De Triemen.

Attractions

These are concentrated in the tiny Veenklooster. There are:

  • The mansion Fogelsanghstate, equipped with furniture, pictures, etc. from the 18th and 19th centuries. Also, the house has a beautiful collection of porcelain from the early 19th century. It is privately owned by the well-known noble family Van Harinxma thoe Slooten. This family has asked the beautiful house disposal of a foundation, which provides open from early May to late October to visit. The estate is surrounded by a beautiful park ( landscape style, 19th century ). This park attracts thousands of lovers approach the historic garden culture.
  • An agricultural museum ( Landbouwmuseum ) where equipment, household goods and utensils from the farm for the period 1850-1950 are shown.
  • Information Centre De Munnik ( " Monk "), a local history museum and tourist office.

Kollum in the center has two beautiful, old churches and several houses under a preservation order. There are also two campsites, but no hotels. The place is a good starting point for excursions in the area, eg the Wadden Sea.
