Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi

Korsun- Schewtschenkiwskyj (Ukrainian Корсунь - Шевченківський - to 1944 Korsun, Russian Корсунь-Шевченковский/Korsun-Schewtschenkowski Polish Korsun ) is a city in the central Ukrainian Cherkasy Oblast with about 18,300 inhabitants and is the center of Rajons same name.

Korsun is one of the oldest cities of Ukraine and is situated on the river Ros about 70 kilometers west of Cherkassy. Administratively include the two villages Harbusyn ( Гарбузин ) and Samoridnja ( Саморідня ) for the borough.

The name of the city dates back to the ancient, located in the Crimea, Greek -Byzantine city of Chersonesus ( Korsun in Old Russian ) from which came the first residents of the city. In honor of the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko, the city was renamed in Korsun- Schewtschenkiwskyj 1944.

History

The fortress Korsun was founded in 1032 by the Kievan Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise of Kiev and was designed to protect against nomads from the southern steppes. In 1240 the city was destroyed by the Tartars under Batu Khan. Under the rule of Poland-Lithuania, the city was rebuilt in 1585 and received the Magdeburg rights. Since 1793 Korsun belonged to the Russian Empire.

Korsun was repeatedly the scene of military battles. So was 1648 a battle of the Cossack uprising under Bohdan Khmelnytsky and the Second World War a large Kesse averaging operation of the Red Army at Korsun instead.

On February 14, 1944 Korsun was liberated by Soviet troops of the crew of the German Wehrmacht.
