World-class soccer players and " capricious Diva" in Germany

In the summer of 1995 Balakov joined the Bundesliga, VfB Stuttgart had converted two million euros to the Portuguese club. The Swabian club had slipped after winning the championship in 1992 in the middle of the league and tried a fresh start. For this purpose he had committed with the Austrian Rolf fringer beginning of the season a new coach who had been successful with an offensive style of play with FC Aarau in Switzerland and led the club to a league title in 1993. Behind the striking duo Giovane Élber and Fredi Bobic, he established himself as a pivotal point of the offensive game. With the Brazilian Portuguese and the German -Croatian Croatian speaking he integrated himself quickly at his new club. Due to lack of constancy of the club but only the tenth place in the table reached.

In the summer Balakov participated with the national team at the 1996 European Championships after within the qualification behind Germany - the first duel decided Bulgaria with a 3-2 success for themselves, so they team before the return match on the final day already at least as a the best runners was qualified and the 1-3 defeat only for the final classification was decisive - the second place in the table was occupied. At the tournament in all three games in use, the team finished second in the group with France, Spain and Romania in third place and was eliminated at the end of the preliminary round.

Also, the early retirement of the Swiss "Nati " had an impact on Balakows further career: after choosing coach Artur Jorge after the tournament was fiercely criticized, he decided to resign. The name fringer Quick fell to succeed and given the at best passable preseason gave VfB Stuttgart after brief negotiations the coach's approval for the Swiss federation. Shortly before the start of the season without a coach standing there chose the club fringers former assistant Joachim Loew to have an interim successor. The offensive trio showed up a goal threat and was soon nicknamed the " Magic Triangle ". With 78 goals this season, the club had scored the most goals of all Bundesliga at the end of the season, Balakov had contributed 13 goals this season. However, since the balance between offense and defense was not true in all games, the club only reached the fourth place in the table. Only under Ralf Rangnick has stabilized the team and came eleventh place in the table. This had appointed him as captain, after substitution, however, Balakov showed a diva because he was given no special treatment more. The relationship deteriorated rapidly, especially since the envisaged by Rangnick tactical system Balakows circumcised playful liberties.

Only after his release Rangnick Balakov received under Felix Magath back its special status. As a result, he returned to his old form and was instrumental in helping the club Stuttgart 2001 held the class. In the following season he was with captain Zvonimir Soldo driving force in midfield, as a runner, the club qualified for the UEFA Champions League. Balakov remained VfB Stuttgart faithful and signed a two -year contract as assistant coach and club representative. Even after the departure of Felix Magath in the summer of 2004 to FC Bayern Munich, he remained under the new coach Matthias Sammer active in this position. At the end of the contract in 2005, he sought a new challenge, but turned down an offer to take over the Bulgarian national team.
